We took
an overnight trip to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert,
considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. Saint Guilhem
was a cousin of Charlemagne and a great warrior who eventually got tired of all
the slaughter and became a monk. He founded the abbey at the center of
town in the 9th century.
The
"le-Désert" part
of the town's name is in honor of the monks who studied and prayed in the Sinai
desert in the early days of Christianity. And, to be honest, because the
town is in the middle of nowhere. That's why we've never visited before -
it doesn't make for an easy day trip.
The town in small but beautiful, with virtually all of the buildings
dating back centuries. Nearby is one of France's best-preserved
medieval bridges. We were very glad we made the trip.
