After
Porto we took the train a few hours up the Douro River to Pinhua, in the heart
of the port wine-growing region. The
banks of the river are very steep and covered with schist. Over the centuries the locals have built
terraces for growing grapes and olives.
It
is rugged country, so rugged that the national road ends here and any further
travel is by boat or on dirt roads. We
took a boat ride upriver until we hit rapids and had to turn around. It was incredibly beautiful, though the day
was cold and rainy so the photos aren’t the best. It was so cold that the boat’s dog got
wrapped in raincoats to keep it warm. Val
was jealous because all she had was me.
After
we got back we went to another winery to raise our spirits.
